Some people think that it is a waste of time for high school students to study literature, such as novels and poems. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In the present times, the interest in literature has declined drastically due to the ignition of technical fields as these avenues provide an infinite number of options for an affluent career. Therefore, a certain group of individuals believes that undergraduate students must not waste their precious time and efforts in studying fiction or verses. Contrastingly, I reject this notion to a far-off extent because I believe literature has played a pivotal role in transforming the histories around the globe.

Since ancient times, literature has been taught in traditional centres of education which paved the road for kings and lords to get enlightened about their surroundings. To exemplify, in old times, pupils were attending gurukuls where their gurus were teaching them through the stories of people. Along with that, literature reflects the life of commoners that boosts their emotional quotient which is really critical in this era. So, literature is highly recommended to keep the human instinct burning in humans.

 

Extending further, the world has witnessed plenty of uprisings in which people with literary skills contributed with an undefeatable spirit. For instance, John Milton in reformation, Rabindranath Tagore in India’s struggle for independence and William Wordsworth’s pleas during French Revolution sparked a spirit of revolution amongst people. Thus, pens can yield those results which even arms and ammunition fail to bring in.

 

To come to a logical conclusion, it can be observed that literature is quite essential to make people strong whether emotionally or intellectually. Not only this, it has also gloriously contributed in making our world a better place to live in.

It is an undeniable fact that literature is significant part of high school curriculum. Although certain individuals believe that it is a wastage of time to study literature, other proponents are in favour of reading it. To a considerable extent, I feel that literature reflects society and it must be an inseparable part of academic syllabus.

 

First and foremost, benefit to study literature is that it helps to transit the histories, cultural rituals and norms to the future generations. It enlightens younger generations about the lifestyle of their ancestors; their contributions towards their country and it also develops the moral values in the pupils. Moreover, in this modern era, youngsters are getting influenced by the western cultures due to the lack of affection with their own cultural values. So, it has become essential to give them knowledge and information about their own culture and tradition via literature.

 

Paradoxically, some people ponder that there are some students who are interested in engineering, medical or technical fields, so it is wastage of time for them to study literature in schools. They believe that it is more appropriate to provide them knowledge with regards to their respective fields. Furthermore, in this era of technology, they need more technical and scientific study which will help them in the future. Thus, these subjects require more dedication and it is more fruitful in the economic growth of the country.

 

 

In a nutshell, the practical and technical subjects are significant in the advancement of a country but literature is significant for cultural and moral growth as it has its own importance.
