And explain what kind of relationship you have with him/her OR explain why you consider  this person to be an interesting neighbour

I believe neighbours are an integral part of our life and they even stand by us in our thick and thin situations. I do have some neighbours with whom I have established cordial cords, moreover, they also assist me in basic chores of day to day life. Here, I would like to talk about one of my neighbours who is an aged man of seventy five and he lives next door to me. We have been known to each other since my childhood. He is a retired professor of English as he had been teaching at DAV college Jalandhar. I feel really fortunate to have him as I can learn plenty of things from his experience. Moreover, he helps me in learning English language; its rules and pronunciation.

I meet him almost daily in the evening when I go to park for jogging. There are plethora of things that make his personality quite unique and fascinating. First of all, he is having joyful as well as helping nature. To be honest, he has faced a lot of hardships in his life, still one can always see a bright smile on his face, along with that, he is totally sane and sorted kind of guy. Secondly, he knows how to find out of the box solutions for every kind of problem like instead of giving alms to needy ones, he gives them work and other earning opportunities. He also shares his views that how rationalism is getting a setback in this modern era. Therefore, I think, he is not only my neighbour but a guide or mentor to me who always gives the best advice one can get to lead a meaningful life. Besides, he is such a neighbor that everyone would desire to have and I always get impressed by his immense qualities which are hard to find in anyone in these times.

Part-3 Follow ups

Do you think neighbours are important?

Definitely, neighbours play an indispensable role in everyone’s life, as they can become pillar of support in the hard times. Additionally, individuals can share their joys and sorrows with them. Sometimes, neighbours can help in solving our daily problems. For example, during corona pandemic, one of our neighbours helped the old lady living next door to them, in buying groceries for her so that she didn’t get the risk of contacting the virus.

What are the qualities of a good neighbour? (What qualities would you like your neighbours  to have?)

There are numerous qualities which a neighbour must possess. First of all, he or she should be supportive as well as co-operative. Secondly, neighbour must have cool and calm nature along with that he or she should avoid gossiping about others. Lastly , he or she should respect one’s privacy.

Do most Indian people know their neighbours?

Undoubtedly, yes. Most of the Indians are aware about their neighbourhood. Especially, people living in countryside areas have extensive information about families living near their homes because they almost share everything with each other, moreover, they consider neighbours to be a part of their family life. However, in case of metropolitan cities, this trend is now changing a bit as they have a hectic schedule and lead a self centric life.

What are some of the qualities of a good community?

In my perspective, sustainable communities are the ones that consider each person as a member of their family irrespective of their age, caste, creed, religion or gender. Moreover, I feel that standing in support of each other and fighting against social evils are the best qualities of an efficient community system.

In India, are there any facilities for improving relations between neighbours?

Yes, in India, there are some common places specifically in villages where neighbours can sit together and share the happenings of their days. Moreover, on particular religious ceremonies people work together in community kitchens which gives them a chance to interact with others and shed every kind of discrimination. Nowadays, there are kitty party clubs in which people can take part and these are particularly prevalent in metropolitan cities.
